Skin Cancer will affect 2 out of every 3 Australians. Despite sun safety education campaigns, thousands of Australian children and adults continue to get sunburnt every year. Sadly, myths and misinformation about sun exposure and skin cancer persist and skin cancer incidence continues to increase. People who spend their working days looking at skin can play a powerful role in helping to change behaviours, explode myths and defeat skin cancer. Now there is training specifically designed for non-medical people who see a lot of skin in their daily work including dermal therapists, massage therapists, makeup and tattoo artists, podiatrists, physios, hairdressers, etc. Having the confidence to speak up when you see something on your client's skin can save a life. Being well informed can help change behaviours to improve long-term skin health. This presentation will explain in simple terms why Australia has a skin cancer problem; explode some myths; and show you how to become part of the solution.

Never one to shy away from a skin care treatment, Erin Deering's journey stopped when her skin therapist noticed a small lesion on her face. In this conversation with Erin and her fellow Skin Check Champion colleague Scott Maggs, they will share their stories of the importance of raising awareness of skin cancer and getting a skin check.

Despite celebrated national sun-safe educational campaigns, such as slip slop slap, and the banning of tanning machines, skin cancer statistics continue to be an ongoing challenge in Australia. With Melanoma being statistically the third most common cancer in this country, 5-year survival rates will only improve by early detection, diagnosis, and lifesaving treatment. Additionally, non-melanoma skin cancers such as Basal Cell Carcinomas are the most commonly diagnosed skin cancer in Australia, and 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with BCC by 70 years of age. Not normally life threatening, they can however cause considerable cosmetic damage locally and need to be removed at the earliest opportunity. The development of dermal therapy techniques over the past decade, in particular the utilization of light and laser therapies, has led to a multitude of questions regarding possible long-term medical consequences. One particular concern is the obliteration of clues signifying a potential skin malignancy. With the utilization of case studies from Skin Smart Australia’s own patients, the necessity for a client to have a professionally provided skin cancer check prior to their laser or light therapy appointment will be demonstrated

This panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities for skin health professionals in the future, what education and training is available in areas of Dermoscopy and skin cancer screening as well as recommendations for continuing education in the space of Dermoscopy. Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians is one of a selection of organisations that is supporting the establishment of a friends of lymphoedema parliamentary group. On March 20, representatives of these organisations will be attending an event at parliament in Canberra to launch a group that aims to raise awareness of the issues and the experience of those with lymphoedema to improve the collection of data and implement the policy that will improve outcomes of those with this condition. ASDC is there to meet parliamentarians and other groups invested in this area to educate them about the importance of skin health and integrity and the role that Dermal Clinicians can play in lymphoedema management. Learn more from South Australian, Leading Lymphoedema Advocate Monique Bareham about her experience with lymphoedema, the importance of skin health for those with lymphoedema and her role as a patient advocate. By registering for this event you will be provided with a link to listen to an insightful pre-recorded session with Monique as we learn about her experience coming to understand how important skin health is and the work she has undertaken for many years to get the topic of lymhoedema on the table of politicians. In March, we will share information on how dermal health professionals can assist in the early detection and conservative management of problematic and chronic oedema. We will also share some information and images with our attendance in Canberra on March 20 2024 for the launch of the Friends of lymphoedema parliamentary group. The establishment of this group is the result of the dedicated efforts of Ms. Monique Bareham (Local Hero of the Year SA 2022) and Ms. Louise Miller–Frost MP, along with her office, who have all invested numerous hours of hard work. The group aims to provide a non-partisan forum for parliamentarians to discuss issues and raise awareness of lymphoedema. It is the hope that this group will provide a space for lymphoedema experts, stakeholder organisations, health policymakers and consumers to come together to drive improvements in the health outcomes of all Australians affected by lymphoedema. When treating patients with Lymphoedema, the oedema is not always the only barrier the patient has. Scar tissue, wounds, skin conditions, physical and mental barriers just to name a few. Sometimes needing support from a variety of health professionals to achieve outcomes. Having access to a network of trained health professionals who understand the needs of these patients can assist greatly with healing times, cost-effectiveness and support. This presentation will highlight 2 case studies where combining other health practitioners in their field resulted in achieving good outcomes.
